Championship men and women round 2 review

Round 2 of the Winter 2022 Championship season is in the books with some big scoring hauls being posted this week. Check out how your clubs team went this week below!

Championship women

PICOT CITY 78 – SURFCOASTERS 52

In their first outing of the season under new head coach Brendan Matthews the Pivot City Women have come away 26 point winners over Surfcoast. A consistent scoring pattern across both halves for both teams was too much for Surfcoast to handle as new Division 2 Stingrays recruit Bree Matthews had a game high 27. She was backed up by NBL1 Women’s forward Antoniette Emma-Nnopu with 22. For Surfcoast Melanie Jackson led the way with 20 and was backed up by Annie Poon’s 16.

YMCA 66 – TRY BOYS 38

YMCA got their first win of the year in Championship Women with a 28 point win over the Bears. A 20 point lead heading into half time was too much for Try Boys to overcome as Abby Loughheads 16 points led YMCA to the win. Young gun Aleks Connolly contributed well with 15 of her own. For Try Boys Eliza Haugh had a team high 12.

SHARKS 93 – CC EAGLES 57

Sharks picked up where they left off last week with a dominant 36 point win over CC Eagles and in the process are showing why they are the front runners to take home the title this season. Georgia Varley was unstoppable in this one dropping 35 points including 6 threes. Kate Duff also stood up this game and had herself a 24 point outing. For the Eagles scoring was even with Ashlea Withers leading the way with 14 and Summer Field contributing 12.

Championship men

SG KINGS 99 – SURFCOASTERS 79

The Kings are on the board in 2022 with a 20 point win over the Surfcoasters. Taking a 8 point lead into half, South Geelong put their foot down to come away with the big win. Rody Spoormakers carried his Big V form into this one with 37 points to lead all scorers. For the Coasters Jack Moran who is having a great season in his first year put up 30 of his own but it wasn’t enough on the night.

YMCA 73 – TRY BOYS 70

An nailbiter in round 2 has seen YMCA sneak a win out against the talented Try Boys outfit. Heading into the half up 5, YMCA were able to hang on by 3 with the injection of stalwart Nathan Herbert. Denver Terrill led the way with 15 for YMCA while for Try Boys Seb Thomason kept his hot streak going with 28 and was backed up by Matt Johns’ 24.

PIVOT CITY 84 – VYTIS 80

Another great game has seen a 4 point deficit at half become a 4 point win for Pivot City in their first game of the season. With both teams short handed it was a battle of the guards as Cohen Blythe and Jordan O’Leary combined for 52 for Pivot while Kevin Brandariz and Romas Liebich put in 43 of their own. Alas Pivot were able to come away with a close win which will keep them in good stead come finals time.

CC EAGLES 67 – SHARKS 52

A low scoring affair has seen the Eagles come away with a great 15 point win over the Sharks. With Liam McInerney inserted back into Christian College’s lineup it was always going to a tough matchup for the Sharks with McInerney pouring in a team high 21. He was closely followed up by Marc Goodwin and his 19.For the Sharks, sharpshooting Lachie Wilson had 26 including 4 threes but it was not enough to get his team over the line.

ROVERS 91 – LARA 68

With a big 23 point win, Rovers have started the 2022 season off hot and are currently commanding 2nd place on the ladder. A close first half was blown out with Rovers outscoring Lara 50-31 to run away victors. The three headed attack of Jarvie Gronbeck and Boyle led the scoring combining for a massive 73 points. For Lara Gabe Hadley led the way with 31, however it was not enough with the rest of Lara enduring an off shooting night.

With that round 2 of the 2022 Winter Championship is in the books, check back in next week to stay up to date with all the latest!
