Week 3 of the championship season is in the books with some incredibly close scores to go along with some great individual performances. Check out how your clubs team went below!
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
YMCA 59 – WILDCATS 42
A close first half between YMCA and the Wildcats saw the halftime buzzer sound with YMCA holding a slight lead by just 2 points. The short-handed Wildcats’ missing star Sarah Elsworthy ran out of gas in the second half as YMCA were able to comfortably pull away for a 27 point win. Aleks Connolly led all scorers with 22 for Y, while Lucy Howard continues her good start to the season with 13. Poppy Stevens was the main contributor for the Wildcats with 13.
SHARKS 69 – PIVOT CITY 66
An absolute thriller in game 2 this week has seen Sharks narrowly avoid defeat to remain undefeated in Winter 2022. Leading by 6 at half the Sharks kept their foot on the pedal to stop Pivot just short of a win going down by just 3 points. Georgia Varley kept her scoring tally going this season with a game-high 22, while fellow Supercats teammate Alex Duck was great with 17. For Pivot, Antoniette poured in 18 including 2 threes to lead the way, while the Matthews sisters doubled up with 14 each.
CC EAGLES 80 – TRY BOYS 39
A low scoring first half for both teams saw the Eagles head to the break up just 10, 29-19. However, a scoring explosion in the second half saw the Eagles pile on 51 points to extend their lead to 41 to take home another great win. Candice Bryt led the way with 21 and was backed up by Summer Field’s 20. For Try Boys, Milly Soutar’s 9 points was a team-best.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
PIVOT CITY 90 – YMCA 80
A tough start for Pivot saw them head the halftime down 7 after some hot shooting by YMCA’s young guns. Coming out of half time pivot were determined to turn the tide with a 17 point swing to push the game in their favour as the final buzzer sounded. Max Kos lit the scoreboard up for 26 points including 5 threes while Jordan O’Leary was right behind him with 24. For Y, Patrick Johnstone led the way with 17 while guard Bailey Bruce produced a 15 point outing.
SG KING 100 – SHARKS 79
William Macpherson let the league know his intentions this week with a 35 point haul to lead all scorers and SG Kings to a win against Sharks. Heading to the half down 1, the Kings turned on the jets, outscoring the Sharks by 22 to take home a comfortable win. Lachlan Wilson made his return to Sharks in round 3 and tried his best to get them over the line with 32 of his own but the young Kings roster ensured that they remained winless to start the season.
WILDCATS 78 – SURFCOAST 77
An absolute heartbreaker in game 3 on the night, as Surfcoast went down by just 1. A missed tip in on the buzzer ensured the Wildcats stayed undefeated to start the season. Phil Renteria led all scorers in this one with 25 points and 3 threes, while Nick Owusu had 19 of his own. For Surfcoast, Vincent Whelan tried his best to secure a win with 23 points, however, it just wasn’t enough on the night.
TRY BOYS 96 – LARA 70
Try Boys kept their top 4 spot in the competition with an emphatic win over Lara in round 3. Heading into halftime, Try Boys had built up a 14 point lead that was too much for the Gabe Hadley led Lara to overcome. Matthew Johns and Darcy Stiles did most of the damage, recording 6 threes each for 26 and 25 points respectively. For Lara, Gabe Hadley led all scorers with 29 however it was not enough to get his team over the line.
CC EAGLES 79 – ROVERS 71
Rovers’ hot start to the season has been halted by the balanced scoring attack put on display by the Eagles in this one. Holding an 18 point lead at the half, Rovers tried to fight back into this one but the lead was too great as the Eagles held out for the 8 point win. Liam McInerney led his team with 21 and was closed backed up by the sharpshooting Nathan Friend who poured in 5 threes on his way to 20 points. For Rovers, Nathan Gronbeck was scoring from everywhere on his way to 31, while big man Rohan Jarvie backed him up with 22.
