NBL1 round 5 recap

It was a top of the table clash on Friday night as our HoopCity Supercats Men and Women hit the road to Mt Gambier to take on the Pioneers in two games that will go down as classics. Check out how our two teams went below in this week’s recap.

HOOPCITY SUPERCATS MEN

Games do not get much closer than this one, and they certainly don’t get much more exciting. The NBL1 South Men’s game of the week was played at the Ice House on Friday and it did not disappoint as fans were delivered a 1 point thriller that came down to the game’s final minutes. A tight first quarter saw the home team take a 4-point lead as the Supercats with added star Jack White, were somewhat slow out of the gate. The men rallied in the second term with a balanced scoring attack to take a 7-point advantage heading into the half. A 5-point swing in the third left the Supercats with a 2-point lead heading into the final term. A back and forth final 10 minutes was capped off with a 3-point dagger by Jack White to recapture the lead and ultimately allow the Supercats to hold on and win 83-82.

With the Supercats now sitting on top of the NBL1 South ladder, they will take on the third-placed Frankston Blues at the Geelong Arena in another blockbuster match this Saturday. Tickets are selling fast so make sure to grab yours here.

HOOPCITY SUPERCATS WOMEN

When you thought the Men’s game couldn’t get any closer, our HoopCity Supercats Women decided that 4 quarters wasn’t enough as their game ended in an OT thriller and an agonising game-winner. A slow first quarter saw the Supercats head into the quarter time break down 7 as the Pioneers started off on fire from the field. A balanced second quarter saw the team capture slight momentum as they were able to close the deficit to just 5. A third-quarter surge allowed the women to tie the game up heading into the fourth setting up a fourth-quarter finish not to be missed. The two teams battled back and forth and when it came down to it, Jess Scannell denied a regulation win as she drained a 3 to send the game to OT.

Jumping out to a quick 6 point lead in OT, the depleted Supercats could not hold on as the Pioneer’s Shakera Reilly buried a corner 3 on the buzzer to sink the hearts of Geelong. The loss drops the Women to 6th on the Ladder on percentage with a 5-2 record.

The team will regroup and look to take on 8th placed Frankston Blues at the Geelong Arena this Saturday, where the Supercats will look to regain a top 4 spot on the ladder. Tickets are selling fast so make sure to grab yours here.
