There were some extremely close games in round 11 of the Championship season, with game-winners, OT thrillers seemingly in every game. Check out how your club’s team went in this week’s review!
SHARKS 91 – SURFCOASTERS 58
Sharks maintained their undefeated streak for another week as they handled their business taking down the Surfcoasters by 33 points. Holding a comfortable lead throughout, Sharks backcourt duo of Alex Duck and Georgia Varley combined for a massive 58 points, with Varley herself going for 38. For the Coasters it was Tammy Vos who led the way with 15.
CC EAGLES 52 – WILDCATS 50
It was a nailbiter on court 4 as the Eagles and Wildcats battled it out in a 2 point thriller. With the scores tied CC Eagles were in control of the ball as they went down low for a late and-1 to steal the game away from the Cats. Phoebe Calvert led the way for the Eagles with 15, while Sarah Elsworthy was best on for the Wildcat’s top-scoring with 19.
PIVOT CITY 94 – TRY BOYS 58
Pivot City have maintained their second spot on the ladder with a dominant win over Try Boys. Taking control early, Pivot had managed a 19-point lead heading into half-time. Combining for 9 threes as a team, the hot shooting was too much for Try Boys as they fell by 36. For Pivot Eve Braslis led the way with 24 while Antoniette Emma-Nnopu backed her up with 22. For the Bears, Kayla Blazko led the way with 18.
PIVOT CITY 76 – TRY BOYS 69
A big fourth quarter lead was nearly whisked away by the Bears last night as they fault valiantly to come back late against Pivot City. Trailing by double digits heading into the fourth, some hot shooting a defence saw them fight back, however there was just not enough time to take down the Pivitonians. With 5 people hitting double figures for Pivot, it was a well rounded team effort, while for Try Boys, Seb Thomason led the way with 19.
WILDCATS 79 – CC EAGLES 70
An absolute battle was had last night on court 1 as the Wildcats chased their 10th win in as many games coming up against the length of the CC Eagles. The physical game saw the Wildcats trail by 1 at the half, before outscoring the Eagles by 9 to take a crucial 8-point lead. Despite the attack of the Eagles, they were unable to overcome the Wildcats backcourt of Gatlin and Owusu who combined for 53. For the Eagles, it was Liam McInerney leading the way with 23.
VYTIS 77 – ROVER 67
Our first overtime of the season was enacted last night as the Vytis Knights big man Lachlan Headlam forced the game to an extra 5 minutes off a last-second putback off the Steve Wiasak miss. A tight game throughout saw neither team take any significant lead, however, in overtime the Knights were just too much for the Rovers as they pulled away 10-point winners, with Rovers failing to score in OT. Romas Liebich put on a great show with 27, while Nathan Gronbeck scored from all three levels to lead the game with 34.
SURFCOASTERS 115 – LARA 109
There was no shortage of scoring in Surfcoasters 6 point OT win against the Giants in round 11 as the Surfocasters build momentum towards the end of the season. Heading to half-time, the Bells held a 12-point lead, however Jackson Bentley and co. mounted a comeback to send the game into OT. With 10 of the 13 players hitting double figures, it was Jack Moran and the Whelan Brothers who were able to lift the Bells to a 6-point victory. For the Giants Jackson Bentley led the way with 34.
YMCA 89 – SHARKS 88
One final thriller to top off round 11 with YMCA coming away 1 point winners against Sharks on court 4. Trailing by 6 with less than a minute to go, some clutch shooting from Sharks saw them get within 1 point with less than 15 seconds to go. However, it was not meant to be as a final second shot was no good handing YMCA an important win on the season. Jack Connolly led the way for Y with 20, while Lachlan Wilson was the man for Sharks with 29.
That wraps up round 11 of the Winter Championship. Check back in next week to see how your team went in round 12!
