With only a few rounds to go in the Winter Championship things are starting to heat up as teams outside the top 4 are pushing to crack into the finals series. Check out how this week’s games played out below!
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN
WILDCATS 92 – TRY BOYS 61
Wildcats have come away with a strong win against the Bears in round 15 behind an offensively explosion from Sarah Elsworthy. Jumping out to an 8-point first quarter lead the Cats poured in the points to extend their lead to 23 at the half. It was smooth sailing from here on out as Elsworthy made quick work of the Bears to the tune of 33 points. For Try Boys, it was Milly Soutar who led the way with 16.
CC EAGLES 56 – SURFCOASTERS 48
A close battle was played on court 4 last night as the Eagles were able to come away after a late scare from the Coasters. Jumping out to a 22-7 lead, the Eagles’ lead slowly slipped away and by 3-quarter time the Coasters had reduced the margin to just 4 points. A defensively minded 4th quarter saw the Eagles hold Surfcoast to just 8 points allowing them to claim an important 8-point win. Summer Field led for the Eagles with 18 while the Coasters Sienna Mccumber’s 20 led all scorers.
SHARKS 107 – YMCA 59
A slow start for the Sharks did not last long in this one as Georgia Varley poured in a massive 41 points to keep the Sharks’ undefeated streak alive. Leading by just 4 at quarter time the Sharks went on a scoring spree in the second dropping a ridiculous 44 points to put the game away early. With Kate duff and Ebony Rolph contributing 24 and 22 each, there was no shortage of scoring at any stage for the Sharks. For the Y Lucy Howard did most of the damage with 29.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEN
WILDCATS 68 – SHARKS 56
Wildcats have once again remained on top of the ladder this week with a close win over Sharks in round 15. Leading by just 4 at quarter time, the Cats put on the burners to extend their lead by 17 as halftime hit. Not out of the fight the Sharks fought back valiantly but were unable to cause an upset as they ran out of gas going down by 12. Lachie Wilson’s 23 led the game while DeMarcus Gatlin led the Wildcats with 18.
PIVOT CITY 79 – LARA 61
Pivot City have ensured they remain in the top four for another week after taking care of business against the Lara Giants to the tune of 18 points. A close game through three quarters with Pivot holding a 10-point advantage most of the way through, Lara, while in striking distance, was unable to maintain their scoring this week as they fell away late. James Till led for Pivot with 21 while Max Kos was close behind him with 19. For Lara Seth Garcia’s 26 led all scorers.
SG KINGS 72 – ROVERS 41
SG Kings have come away with a solid 31-point win over Rovers in round 15. A slow start saw both teams struggle to get on the scoreboard with the Kings leading 8-6 through 10 minutes. It was the Kings who woke up first as they broke the scoring drought and by half-time were leading by 12. Continuing to dominate the scoreboard behind Will Macpherson’s well-rounded 33 points the Kings were able to pull away for an easy win. For the Rovers, it was Jayson Tomicic who led the way with 16.
CHRISTIAN COLLEGE 123 – TRY BOYS 98
The Eagles have maintained second spot on the ladder with an offensive bonanza, dropping off the Bears by 25 points. A 3-point 1st quarter margin quickly developed into double digits as the Eagles put up 39 points in the 3rd, extending their lead to 15. The fourth quarter saw the Eagles double the Bears 30-15 in the scoring column to finish out the 25-point victory. Liam McInerney and Nathan Friend both contributed 23 for the Eagles while Seb Thomason led all scorers with 26 for the Bears.
