A Georgia Cox-inspired Navexa Geelong United has claimed its third win of the Big V Youth League 1 Women’s season after outlasting Sunbury at Geelong Arena Annexe on Sunday, 73-67.
Cox, who played just under eight minutes for United’s NBL1 team on Saturday night, was too hard for the Jets to handle inside as she finished with a team-high 19 points.
It was part of an even performance from Jason Bannerman’s roster, who were able to put the disappointment of a 93-57 loss to Craigieburn the night before behind them.
“Our ladies came to play,” Bannerman said.
“We played out a solid four quarters, with our defensive pressure up the floor proving to be the difference.
“Some promising signs for the team after Saturday night’s defeat.
“Our guards set up the win allowing our bigs to do the job at both ends.”
After 15 points in the loss to the Eagles, Cashide Green was solid again offensively with 12 points against Sunbury.
Viktoria Crump also contributed 12 points, while captain Vanessa Marsh compiled an impressive stat line of 10 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and six assists.
Geelong United’s next assignment is a challenging trip to Eltham on Saturday night to face the unbeaten Wildcats.
An impressive shooting performance has helped Geelong United’s Youth League men extend their winning streak to five after seeing off Craigieburn.
Despite Marach Marach and captain Seth Garcia being on NBL1 duties, United overcame a slow start, which saw it trailing by four points at quarter time, to claim a 91-66 victory.
Bailey Bruce led all scorers with 20 points in just 19 minutes on the floor, while Locky Wilson (18 points) and Ethan Nicholls (15) also kept the scoreboard ticking over.
United shot the ball at 53 per cent, with that improving to 60 per cent inside the arc.
“It was a great opportunity to showcase the depth of our squad,” coach Luke Beard said.
“We won the game in the second quarter when we held Craigieburn to nine points.
“It was great to see all players contribute, with some real coming of age games from Locky and Ethan.”
Geelong United next faces Keysborough as part of a triple-header with the Geelong United Supercats NBL1 South women and men at Geelong Arena on Saturday afternoon.
