Hoop City Geelong United Sueprcats men’s coach Grant Wallace says there will be no shortage of motivation for his roster to open their 2023 account when it hosts Frankston at Geelong Arena on Saturday night.
The Blues ended Geelong United’s title hopes in the first round of last year’s playoffs and have made an impressive start to 2023 to sit second on the table with a 5-1 win-loss record.
United will be boosted by the return of captain DeMarcus Gatlin from suspension, providing a boost to the firepower at Wallace’s disposal.
“We have had three good games this year and no reward for effort, Coach Wallace said.
“Demarcus will provide us with much-needed leadership and intensity.
“Frankston is a well led group with wonderful scoring talent and experience highlighted by NBL veteran Brad Newley and arguably the best point guard in the competition in Lucas Barker.”
For the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats women, a chance to climb into the top eight is on offer against Frankston.
United enters the clash off the back of two confidence-boosting wins, including a stunning 18-point comeback against Sandringham last Friday night.
The clash with the Blues will mark the first appearance of Polish National Team guard Agnieszka Skobel.
“Aga’s versatility is not just limited to playing one spot on the floor,” coach Matthew Paton said.
“We can look to play her in different situations, and having one more player that’s able to contribute and play a significant role will be massive for us.
“The timing’s good for Aga because, having come off two wins, there’s not the pressure that a new addition is going to change everything.
“For her, it is adding to a successful mix rather than having to be a catalyst for changing the result of the club.”
