Five players scoring in double figures has helped Surfcoasters open its Geelong United Basketball Men’s Winter Championship account.

Led by 23 points from Jack Moran and 21 from Geelong United Youth League teammate Kuol Reech, overcame a final quarter surge from Lara Giants to claim a 98-88 result at AWA Alliance Bank Stadium.

In a free-flowing and physical matchup, five players finished in double figures for Surfcoasters, with Clancy Whelan (19), Ben Rigby (18) and Matthew Lloyd (10) also important to the result.

Jackson Bentley was again prolific for the Giants as he finished with a game-high 24 points, while Joel McFall also shot well for 23 points.

A 25-5 second quarter proved the difference as Pivot City overcame Sharks 83-64 at Geelong Arena.

Trailing by three points at quarter time, Pivot turned the contest in its favour with an impressive defensive performance in the second period.

Max Kos was again the standout on the scoresheet for Pivot as he finished with 21 points, while Tyler Erard (18 points), veteran Jason Reardon (16) and Jordan O’Leary gave the ladder leaders plenty of scoring punch.

Malik Davis followed up an impressive debut the previous week with 21 points for Sharks, who were also well served by 17 points from Lachie Wilson.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP | ROUND 4 WRAP

Liam McInerney and Jye Boyle combined by 57 points as Christian College Eagles proved too good for South Geelong Kings, 102-78, at AWA.

McInerney finished with 29 points, and Boyle contributed 28 as the Eagles squared their season ledger at 2-2.

Will McPherson and Kyle Meyer finished with 23 and 21, respectively, for the Kings.

YMCA connected on 13 three-pointers as it overcame Vytis 96-73 at AWA.

Nathan Herbert made five from the beyond-the-arc on his way to 25 points, and Liam Herbert followed up a career night for the Geelong United Supercats on the weekend with four threes in his 22 points.

Patrick Johnstone and David Overgaauw each finished with 18 points,

Andy Przybylkiewicz and Steve Wiasak were best for the Knights with 15 points each.

The hot hand of Robbie Kennedy proved crucial as Wildcats maintained second spot on the ladder following a 92-70 victory over Tigers at AWA.

The left-hander finished with 31 points, which included seven three-pointers.

The contest was in the balance until halftime, with Wildcats leading by just seven points. However, a 29-19 third quarter helped Wildcats end Tigers’ challenge.

Kennedy was well supported by 20 points from Nick Owusu and 14 from Tom Henkel.

Jackson Cone was the standout for Tigers with 25 points.
