A Nathan Herbert masterclass has helped YMCA overcome a half-time deficit to defeat Try Boys 73-67 at AWA Alliance Bank Stadium in Round 5 Geelong United Basketball Men’s Winter Championship action on Tuesday night.
The 38-year-old poured in 28 points, which included five three-pointers, as Y overcame the absence of some key players to hold off the youthful Bears for its fourth-straight win.
Jack Connolly (14 points) and Patrick Johnstone (10) were also crucial.
Seb Thomason was impressive with 24 points for Try Boys, while Aaron Prendergast’s outside shooting was a highlight as he knocked down three-pointers in a 20-point haul.
Jamieson Hultgren and Liam McInerney had 20 points apiece, while Nick Velasquez contributed 16 points as Christian College Eagles proved too strong for Vytis 92-57 at Geelong Arena.
The Eagles outscored the Knights in every quarter to sit third on the ladder after five rounds.
Veteran Romas Liebich battled hard for Vytis with 18 points, while James Osborne and Dane Bow joined Liebich in knocking down three three-pointers in scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Max Kos was on target from outside the arc as the unbeaten start to the season of Pivot City rolled on with a 96-72 win over Wildcats at AWA.
Kos finished with 29 points, which included six three-pointers.
Jordan O’Leary and Cohen Blythe also made life tough for the Wildcats’ defence with 23 points.
Nick Owusu (19 points) and Robbie Kennedy (17) were best for Wildcats.
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP | ROUND 5 WRAP
Lachie Wilson exploded for 36 points as Sharks stormed home to beat Surfcoasters, 93-8, at AWA.
Trailing 63-60 at three-quarter time, Sharks outscored Surfcoasters 33-30.
Wilson’s 36 points included seven three-pointers. Scott McCarthy was next best with 13 points.
Clancy Whelan led the way for Surfcoasters with 23 points, while Ben Rigby had 19.
Big man Griffin Errey helped South Geelong KingsΒ to their second win of the season.
In a tight contest at AWA, the Kings held off Tigers, 81-76.
Tom Slee and Kyle Meyer were also influential for the Kings with 14 points apiece.
Oscar Leavold (22 points) and Evan Juros (17) kept Tigers in the contest.
