Skobel inspires United

A stunning first half from Polish star Agnieszka Skobel has laid the platform for the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats women’s seventh win of the NBL1 South season.

Skobel scored all of her 19 points in the opening two periods against Nunawading, as United claimed a fifth consecutive victory, 86-67.

She also finished with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in another impressive all-round performance.

Not for the first time this season, each member of the starting five finished in double figures.

Ella Tofaeono added 15 points, Chantel Horvat 14, and captain Sarah Elsworthy and Eve Braslis had 13.

Tofaeono also added 11 rebounds, Braslis eight boards, and Horvat seven.

Elsworthy had eight rebounds and eight assists to miss a triple-double narrowly.

Jess Scannell provided plenty of spark off the bench with nine points, three assists and three steals.

Alice Kunek was not surprisingly the standout for Nunawading, with the former Opal pouring in 27 points.

However, Taylah Schmitdke was the only other Spectre to reach double figures (11 points).

“We were able to put together a great team performance, with everyone playing their roles throughout the game,” coach Matthew Paton said.
“We had to make a few adjustments on the run, especially when you have an opposing player score so freely in the first half, but we executed those changes well, and the even contribution across the board – at both ends of the floor – was actually the most pleasing aspect of this performance.”

“With all five starters scoring in double figures, it shows just how unselfish these players are and how willing they are to work for one another.”

Geelong United faces a return meeting with the unbeaten Bendigo on the road on Saturday night.

When the two teams met in Round 2 at Geelong Arena, United, who were yet to gain the services of Horvat or Skobel, pushed the Braves to three points.
