United embraces Pioneers challenge

WITH its account open for season 2023, the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats Men start a challenging fortnight with a home-road double-header against Mt Gambier and Diamond Valley.

It’s part of four games in eight days, with the trip to Tasmania to take on Hobart and North West Tasmania to follow next week.

However, after taking down Frankston last week with an impressive defensive effort, coach Grant Wallace is keen to see how his team stacks up against the unbeaten Mt Gambier.

The Pioneers’ six wins have come at an average of 17 points, with big man Jacob Lampkin a standout with averages of 23.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

“In any sport, in any season, you always want to measure yourself against the absolute best,” Wallace said.

“A deep roster of talented athletes who are well coached, we are very much looking forward to the challenge ahead against the benchmark of the competition.

“We will see how much we have improved and test the depth of our own roster.”

NBL1 WOMEN: DEPTH BOOST FOR UNITED

Geelong United will then have a quick turnaround and a trip up the highway for a meeting with Diamond Valley.

The Eagles, who sit sixth with a 3-3 win-loss record heading into the weekend, will have hosted Ballarat the night before.

Saturday night’s matchup with Mt Gambier is part of Lifeline Round, with $1 from every ticket sold supporting Lifeline.

$1 from every drink sold at the Gage Road Brewery Bar in the upstairs function room will also be donated to Lifeline.
