Women’s Championship Wrap | Round 5

An impressive defensive effort through the second and third quarters has proved crucial as Wildcats handed Sharks their first loss of the 2023 Geelong United Basketball Winter Championship women’s season on Tuesday night.

After trailing 17-12 at quarter time, Wildcats held Sharks to just seven points in the second quarter and six points in the third period before holding off a late charge for a 63-54 victory.

Piper Copeland was a standout for Wildcats with 18 points, including four three-point makes.

Youngster Jasmine King (15 points) and Chantelle Hall (12) were also prominent.

Cortney Hollowood (23 points) and Georgia Varley (20) provided their usual productivity.

Pivot City continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 72-32 result against Try Boys at Geelong Arena.

Twenty-four points from the in-form Eve Braslis and 22 from Miley Dawkins gave Pivot a one-two punch that the Bears couldn’t contain.

Shania Soutar was best for Try Boys with 11 points, while Kayla Blazko contributed nine points.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP | ROUND 5 WRAP

Experienced big Kim Hammond has proved the difference as YMCA stayed in touch with the top two with an 83-43 victory over Surfcoasters at AWA.

Hammond’s presence inside the key was too much for Surfcoasters to handle as she helped herself to 35 points.

Harmony Parker (16 points) and Molly Kent (12) also kept the scoreboard ticking over Seb Loader’s roster.

Eloise Moran (12 points), Amelia Jovic (8) and Maya Malone did their best for Surfcoasters.

Christian College Eagles had the bye.
