Hoop City Geelong United Supercats men’s coach Grant Wallace believes his team can only afford one more loss if it wants to be part of the NBL1 South playoffs.
United enters the final three weeks of the regular season sitting in ninth spot with an 8-8 win-loss record.
12 wins were enough to sneak into the top eight in 2022, but the logjam in the bottom half of the top eight, where four teams are sitting on ten wins, means 13 might be the lucky number.
“6-0 doesn’t even guarantee us the way the teams are going,” Wallace said.
“But our best is as good as anyone.”
NBL1 WOMEN | NO TAKING TIGERS EASY
Geelong United has two tough challenges to stay in the playoff mix this weekend.
On Friday night at Geelong Arena, the Melbourne Tigers (11th, 8-9) come to town also looking to keep their top-eight hopes alive.
Then on Saturday, the Supercats head around Port Phillip Bay for a return matchup with Frankston (2nd, 13-4).
When the two teams met back in Round 4, Geelong United snapped a four-game losing run with a 79-73 victory at Geelong Arena.
However, Coach Wallace says the meeting with the Tigers is the forefront of his mind.
“If we start worrying about Frankston, we’ll forget about Melbourne and fall over,” he said.
“Melbourne is pretty damn good, too. There are no dummies in this league.
“We’ll be trying to get Melbourne, and then we’ll concentrate on Frankston.
“Frankston doesn’t have a game on Friday night, so they’ll be fresh.”
