Playoff berth on the cards for United men

A spot in the Big V Youth League 1 men’s playoffs will become a reality for Navexa Geelong United if they can overcome Camberwell at Geelong Arena on Saturday night.

United sits fourth with a 13-4 record, three wins clear of the sixth-placed Dragons.

With Geelong United winning the matchup with Camberwell in Round 7, even if Luke Beard’s men lost its last four regular season games and the Dragons won out, United would remain inside the top six on head-to-head.

Geelong United could also find itself in with a victory and loss by Keysborough (7th, 9-8)

However, Beard is keen to finish strong to push for a top-two spot.

“We know on our day we can match it with anyone, so we need to ensure we remain locked in and focussed,” he said.

“There needs to be a want defensively to absorb contact and get stops, and then offensively; we need to keep moving the ball quickly, balanced with looking after it and giving up good for great.”

Meanwhile, the Navexa Geelong United Women (10th, 4-14) will unveil debutant Miley Dawkins in their matchup with Camberwell (4th, 11-5)

The 14-year-old, who plays in the Geelong United Basketball Community Competition with Pivot City, is a teammate of Jasmine King in the United VJBL under-16 girls’ first team.

“With a depleted squad coming into our last few rounds and injury to a couple of our ladies, we will be suiting up Miley Dawkins,” coach Jason Bannerman said.

“We have shown in the last three games that we can match it on the scoreboard and compete.

“When our defensive pressure is on, so are we, But lapses in this area cause us to play catch up.”

Tickets for Saturday night’s doubleheader are available at the door. Payment by card only.
