The consistent Agnieszka Skobel has produced a standout performance to help the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats overcome Dandenong and maintain touch with the NBL1 South top four.
The Polish star was at her slashing best on her way to 24 points (67 per cent shooting) as United overcame a second-quarter challenge from the Rangers to claim a 92-84 victory.
“Best game of the season for her – and not just statistically,” coach Matthew Paton said.
“One of the reasons that we wanted to bring her in and why we’ve loved her since her arrival is her efficiency.
“If you leave her open, she’ll hit a shot. If you play too far out on her, she’ll slice you to the rim.
“She’s deceptively quick and strong and just plays a very smart game and makes those around her better.”
Again, five Supercats finished in double figures.
Co-captain Sarah Elsworthy joined Skobel in playing all 40 minutes and tallied 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Chantel Horvat also contributed 21 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
The even spread of scoring helped counter the 37 points Rangers star Nyadiew Puoch poured in.
“Puoch is a star of the future – if not now,” Paton said. “I predict she’ll have a breakout year in the WNBL next season.
“But, in saying that, having an opposing team with stars like that does make them more predictable to defend. Knowing it and stopping it is another thing.
“Players the likes of Puoch, (Sarah) Boothe. And a couple of their bench players stepped up and played some good cameos, which meant they were a challenge all the way to the end.”
A challenging weekend awaits Geelong United, with a trip to Mt Gambier (3rd, 11-4) on Friday night before hosting Eltham (8th, 8-7) on Sunday afternoon.
