Coach Grant Wallace has spent the days since the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats’ ledger-squaring win over Dandenong focusing on Friday night’s road-home double opener against Mt Gambier.
The second meeting with the Pioneers (5th, 10-5) this season comes ahead of a Sunday matchup at Geelong Arena with Eltham (4th, 10-5).
Despite both games being crucial to Geelong United’s hopes of reaching the playoffs, Wallace isn’t looking past the trip across the border.
“My theory always is look at the first game and you don’t spend much time on the second game,” he said.
“We’ve spent a lot of time on Mt Gambier this week… they’re tough, really tough.
“If we want to play finals, we’ve got to beat teams like that. If we want to win the thing, we’ve got to beat teams like that.
“It’s a great challenge.”
NBL1 WOMEN | DIFFERENT LOOK FOR UNITED
Geelong United snatched a one-point win over the Pioneers, 106-105, in Round 5 after Mt Gambier’s Chris Seeley was handed a tech foul on a Supercats’ inbounds pass with just four seconds remaining.
Gabe Hadley converted the free throw for United to claim victory.
Both teams will have a different look to last time.
“They didn’t have (Jacob) Lampkin, which hurt them, to a degree,” Wallace said. “But, it made them quicker.
“But, we didn’t have (Matt) McCarthy. He’s going to add a lot to us defensively.”
