An NBL1 season spent primarily behind the eight-ball ends with a home-road double-header for the Hoop City Geelong United Supercats this weekend.
The Supercats will host Keilor Thunder before travelling to Waverley on Sunday for a meeting with the finals-bound Falcons, hoping to avoid finishing on single-figure wins for the first time since a Geelong team departed the NBL at the end of 1996.
Aside from a six-game winning streak that breathed some life into the season after starting 0-4, Geelong United has battled for consistency, with eight of its 11 losses coming against teams outside the top eight.
Frustratingly, against teams inside the top eight, the Supercats are 6-3, showing that when at their best, they can match it with anyone.
When Geelong United headed to Keilor in Round 9, the Thunder prevailed in overtime, 106-104, despite 29 points from Gabe Hadley.
That was cancelled out by Keilor’s lighting it up from beyond the arc, with Kuany Kuany and Cirkook Riak combining for 9-16 from outside.
Waverley, which hosts Mt Gambier on Saturday night, needs two wins to snatch a top-four finish.
If the Falcons lose to the Pioneers, it may turn the meeting with Geelong United into a must-win matchup to maintain a finals berth.
