Men’s Championship Wrap | Round 10

YMCA has narrowly maintained second spot on the Geelong United Basketball Men’s Winter Championship ladder after holding off a fast-finishing Surfcoasters at AWA Alliance Bank Stadium on Tuesday night.

In a high-scoring battle in which the two teams combined for 23 three-pointers, Y snuck home 106-105.

Veteran guard Nathan Herbert made it consecutive 30-point games, while Bailey Bruce’s solid run of form continued with 27 points.

Liam Herbert (18 points) and Ash Cannan (15 points) also made significant contributions.

Jack Moran was a standout for Surfcoasters, finishing with 30 points, with Ben Rigby (20 points), Josh Chery (17) and Ethan Nicholls (13).

Lara Giants stormed home in the final quarter to snatch a one-point win over Try Boys at AWA.

Trailing 60-47 at three-quarter time, the Giants outscored the Bears 27-13 to claim a 74-73 victory.

Jackson Bentley stood out for the Giants with 32 points on the back of five three-pointers.

Big man Jack Burnett was also important with 10 points.

Seb Thomason paced Try Boys scoring with 29 points.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP WRAP | ROUND 10

An impressive first half has helped Wildcats move back into the top four following an 88-74 win over South Geelong Kings at AWA.

After jumping to a 23-14 lead at quarter time, Wildcats strengthened their advantage with a 27-10 second term.

The Kings added some respectability to the scoreboard with a 50-38 second half.

In an even team performance, all six Wildcats scored in double figures, led by 23 points from Phil Renteria and 18 from Kale Wells.

Tom Slee and Peter Elliott were best for South Geelong with 25 and 24 points, respectively.

The Blythe brothers have combined for 62 points to help Pivot City to a tenth consecutive win, pulling away late from CC Eagles to claim a 99-86 victory at AWA.

Cohen finished 36, while Ethan contributed 26 for Pivot, who remain four points clear on top of the table.

Marach Marach was also crucial with 18 points.

Veteran big Liam McInerney dropped 25 points for the Eagles, with Nathan Freind and Jamieson Hultgren contributing 15 points apiece.

Sharks overcame a two-point three-quarter time deficit to defeat Vytis by eight points at Geelong Arena.

In front of a good-sized crowd of supporters as part of their Club Night, Sharks outscored the Knights 30-20 in the final term.

Lachie Wilson (25 points), Scott McCarthy (23) and Malik Davis (19) formed a vital trio for Sharks.

For the Knights, mid-season addition Yusuf Qaafow was best with 26 points in an impressive display of outside shooting, while Michael Rebula scored 23.

The winless Tigers had the bye.
