Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is pleased to announce it will partner with Belgravia Leisure to tender for the management rights of the Geelong Arena.
The joint tender results from extensive discussions between GUB and Belgravia Leisure, with both keen to see Geelong Arena remain a facility the community can access daily.
“Geelong Arena and the adjoining Annexe has been the heartbeat of basketball in the region for nearly 30 years,” GUB CEO Mark Neeld.
“Geelong United Basketball uses the facility’s four courts seven days a week for our thriving Community Competition, which has 7000 participants from under-10s to seniors playing in club-based and social teams.
“We are committed to community access and maintaining that access.”
Mr Neeld also stated that if the joint tender were successful, GUB’s extensive range of participation and inclusion programs would be expanded to Geelong Arena.
“We are keen to see programs including Walking Basketball, All Abilities, Social Women’s and wheelchair basketball more readily accessible to the people of the northern suburbs,” he said.
“We thank Belgravia Leisure for wanting to be part of our journey of promoting lifelong activity across Greater Geelong.”
Working in partnership with Government, not-for-profit and the commercial sector, Belgravia Leisure has a strong track record of delivering diverse, accessible and affordable activities via its management services across Australia and New Zealand.
Currently partnering with more than 70 Local and State Government authorities, Belgravia Leisure adopts an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable approach to operations across all its sites.
Belgravia Leisure employs more than 5500 staff inβ―over 230 swim, sports, fitness, health and wellness and leisure facilities and is part of Australian company, Belgravia Group.
Belgravia Leisure CEO Nick Cox said his organisation is excited by the prospect of managing the Geelong Arena in partnership with Geelong United Basketball.
“Working collaboratively, with such a key stakeholder of the Arena, will enable us to increase participation via a range of new activations and reinstate its status as a vibrant events space for the Geelong community,” Mr Cox said.
Tenders for the management of Geelong Arena open on 18 September 2023 and close on 10 October 2023, with the City of Greater Geelong announcing the successful tender in November.
