Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is pleased to announce the next player signing for our inaugural WNBL season, Gemma Potter.
The 6 foot guard will join Geelong Unitedβs maiden WNBL side following the current NBL1 South season, where she has been playing with the Diamond Valley Eagles averaging 19.15 points, 3.23 assists and 7 rebounds for the season.
Speaking on her decision to join Geelong, in particular for the clubs first season, Gemma see’s this as an opportunity to make it about more than basketball – “It’s a very exciting and rewarding experience that I can not wait to start,” she said. “Having a chance to shape a club from the ground up isn’t something that comes around often, so I’m really looking forward to getting to work with the girls, and to be a part of something special for both women’s sport and the Geelong community.”
As for her new coach, Chris Lucas, the opportunity to play under his guidance was one that Gemma could not pass up – “I’ve obviously played against him in previous WNBL seasons,” said Gemma, “but now I’m looking forward to being on his side of the bench for this upcoming season in Geelong and the development that he’ll be able to help bring to me and my game.”
For Chris, he see’s a lot of potential in Gemma and is ready to put her to the test – “I’m really glad to have Gemma in the program. She’s had a couple of rough years with injuries, but showed at the back end of the last WNBL season what she’s capable of,” Chris said. “I’m going to be challenging her defensively – She’s going to be required to take some pretty tough defensive match ups throughout the season, and I think with those challenges she’ll have tremendous growth and excel in that area.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming WNBL season, Gemma’s winning mindset always leaves one thing in her mind – “Finals and a championship is something probably every athlete aspires for, and I’m quite a competitive person so that’ll always be in the back of my mind,” she said, “but more than that, the opportunity to establish the pathway for younger female athletes in the community is something that’s going to be quite prevalent through not only my, but the teams actions. I know for a fact that with the squad Chris is putting together, we’re going to be able to establish great team values and culture, which will hopefully draw everyone in to want to be a part of something special.”
Please join us in welcoming our newest addition to our WNBL roster, Gemma Potter.
