CITY OF GREATER GEELONG AND GEELONG UNITED BASKETBALL:
A GAME-CHANGING PARTNERSHIP FOR WOMEN’S SPORT
The City of Greater Geelong and Geelong United Basketball (GUB) are thrilled to announce a transformative partnership, solidifying a shared commitment to advance women’s sport, foster community engagement and celebrate the vibrant spirit of Greater Geelong.
This landmark collaboration will see significant investment into Geelong United’s Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) program, championing pathways for female athletes, coaches, and administrators, and elevating women’s basketball to new heights across the region.
The partnership reflects a joint vision to inspire and support female participation in sport, from grassroots to elite levels. The City’s investment will bolster resources for Geelong United’s WNBL team, ensuring world-class facilities, development programs, and opportunities for women to thrive both on and off the court.
“This new partnership will significantly enhance the visibility of Geelong United as a brand,” said Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM, sharing Council’s excitement to support Geelong United’s WNBL team in its inaugural season and the NBL1 sides. “As our region’s largest indoor sport venue, Geelong Arena will continue to be the home of basketball, and we can’t wait to watch the athleticism and determination of our first WNBL team at the elite level there. I urge the broader community to show their support and get behind Geelong United.”
A cornerstone of this collaboration is the commitment to community engagement. Together, the City of Greater Geelong and GUB will roll out initiatives that connect the WNBL team with local schools, junior athletes, and community groups, providing inspirational role models and encouraging greater participation in physical activity.
Geelong United Basketball CEO Mark Neeld emphasised the importance of this partnership, “This is a pivotal moment for our organisation. It demonstrates the City’s belief in the power of basketball to bring people together and create lasting positive impacts in our community. We’re proud to represent Geelong on the national stage and look forward to what we can achieve together.”
