Max Kos has made a stunning start to the new Geelong United Basketball Winter Championship season as he racked up 40 points to help Pivot City overcome Tigers 114-89 at AWA Alliance Bank Stadium.

Kos knocked down nine three-pointers in his impressive haul as Pivot used a 37-24 final period to pull away from the inexperienced Tigers roster, who were making their return to Winter Championship after several years absence.

Cohen Blythe also impressed for Pivot to finish with 24 points, with Jordan O’Leary contributing 17.

In all, Pivot connected on 20 three-point attempts.

Oscar Leavold was best for Tigers with 24 points, and Riley Pendergast contributed 17.

A night out from Phil Renteria has helped Wildcats to a narrow 67-63 win over Vytis at Geelong Arena.

Renteria finished with 35 points as the ‘Cats held off a final-quarter surge from the Knights, who piled on 30 points to keep the contest interesting until the end.

Robbie Kennedy was next best for Wildcats with nine points, while Nick Owusu contributed eight.

Romas Liebich stood out for Vytis with 23 points, with big man Dane Hollenkamp finishing with 13.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP WRAP – ROUND 1

An even team performance has helped CC Eagles overcome Surfcoasters 89-80 at AWA.

Five players scored in double figures, with Jamieson Hultgren (20 points), Liam McInerney (18) and newcomer Nick Velasquez (15) leading the way.

Jack Moran was best for Surfcoasters with 25 points, while Kuol Reech and Matthew Lloyd each poured in 17 points.

An impressive display of outside shooting from Jackson Bentley has helped Lara Giants outlast YMCA 74-64 at AWA.

Bentley knocked down six three-pointers in his 25-point haul.

Joel McFall (16 points), James Box (15) and Jack Burnett (14) were also important for the Giants.

Veteran Nathan Herbert dropped 24 points for Y, while young gun Bailey Bruce knocked down five three-pointers in his 17 points.

An 18-13 final quarter has helped Try Boys to an 86-76 result against Sharks at AWA.

Kade McKenzie (19 points) and Seb Thomason (17) led the way for the Bears, who had five players in double figures.

Lachie Wilson (27 points) and Scott McCarthy (21) did everything they could to keep Sharks in the contest.
