Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is pleased to announce the signing of Alex Sharp for the remainder of the 2024/25 WNBL season.
The 6 foot guard joins Geelong at a very exciting time for the club. Currently in our first season with a 4-5 win loss record and a finals spot within reach, Alex’s previous WNBL experience (2 season with the Perth Lynx, and one season with the UC Capitals) will be a valuable addition to the side.
After spending some time playing overseas, Alex describes it as a “surreal” feeling being back in the WNBL, “I’ve been watching from afar and seeing what the league’s looking like this season,” she said. “I’m excited to step in with Geelong – A very exciting team. They’re bringing things together and I think I can really help out with what we’ve got going on.”
Head Coach Chris Lucas is looking forward to what Alex brings to the squad, and hopes the experience she brings to the table will be an added guiding force for his young roster, “I’ve know Alex since she was a junior, and she’s a super positive signing for the team. She’ll bring that extra steadiness and experience into our group,” he said. “She wanted to be with us and I think that’s a real positive. Her personality ticks all the boxes in regards to culture and values of the club and she’ll be a great fit for us.”
Alex has previously had short stints playing under Chris’s guidance, and is excited for the opportunity of an extended period under his coaching style, “I’ve never had that chance to be coached by him through a longer season. I really like the way he looks at the game, his basketball IQ is next level so it’ll be great to learn from him, but also bring my experience as well and collaborate as we move forward into the latter end of the season.”
As our team embark on a 4 game away stretch over the Christmas/New Year period, Alex will hit the ground running, expected to suit up as early as our round 8 clash against her former side Perth.
